'American Idol' back for new season Jan. 12

"American Idol" is returning on Tuesday, January 12 and Wednesday, January 13. It will be the shows ninth season. Ellen DeGeneres will be replacing Paula Abdul as a judge.
"24" will also be returning with a pair of two-hour episodes. The shows will air January 17 and January 18. When "American Idol's" season is over "Glee" will take its spot on April 13.
I have never been a fan of "American Idol." I do think that Elen DeGeneres is hillarious. I might tune in just to watch her. I think that she will be a great addition to the show.

About Half in U.S. Would Pay for Online News, Study Finds

In a study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group in October, 48 percent of Americans would be willing to pay to read news online and through mobile service. Americans are less willing to pay compared to most Western countries.
People in nine countries were surveyed and Great Britain and the United States tied for the lowest figure of 48 percent. Great Britain, the United States, Germany, France, Spain, Norway and Finland were among countries that were surveyed.
Americans said on average they would pay only $3 a month to read news online. John Rose said, “Consumer willingness and intent to pay is related to the availability of a rich amount of free content."
The reason Americans would be willing to pay next to nothing is because there are other ways to get the news for free.
Charging people to look at newspapers online could significantly increase profit for newspapers. Amercans said would be willing to pay for an admission to view a number of newspaper online.
Avid newspaper readers in other countries are the ones who said they would be willing to pay the biggest buck to receive the news.
This is a very interesting topic due to the fact that people aren't buying newspapers anymore simply due to the fact that you can just go online to see the news for free.

Online Ads Are Booming, if They’re Attached to a Video

Videos are becoming more prominent on web pages such as CNN.com and ESPN.com. Many Categories of advertising are shrinking, while video ads are booming. The reasoning behind this is because of commercials that are shown during the videos.
Major events bring a lot of people online to watch videos. “Every watershed event leaves video more popular than before,” said Charles W. Tillinghast, the president of MSNBC.com.
The general manager of CNN.com said that “people are using the Internet in a different way now.” He stated, “With broadband penetration becoming ubiquitous and more and more sites having this easy capability, people are expecting video to be there.”
Video's on websites can be very costly, but seem to be worth it. Video's are the fast growing segment of Internet advertising. For the first half of 2009 the estimated revenue from video advertising was $477 million, which was 38 percent higher from the same time the year before.
“The Web is fulfilling this promise of being a medium where you can enjoy video as much as you can see it on TV,” Mr. Tillinghast said. During these videos just like t.v., advertisements are shown.
I watch a lot of video clips online and they all have advertisements. I can understand why the revenue for these advertisements is going up due to the amount of people who go online and watch videos.

Leno says he'd return to 'Tonight' if NBC asked

Leno mentions that he enjoys the role of "being the underdog," and it is part of the territory of being in the public eye. Since The Jay Leno show aired in September it has not been doing so well in the ratings.
He said that a decision such as leaving the tonight show to be on The Jay Leno show is not his to make. When asked if he would like to go back to being the host of the tonight show he stated that he would like to if NBC gave him the chance.
Since The Jay Leno aired numbers have not been that good and Leno is receiving a lot of scrutiny from critics.
I would love to see Leno on the tonight show again. I think the tonight show was a lot better than The Jay Leno show.

Leno Loses to a CBS Rerun

NBC still has hopes of the "Jay Leno Show" turning around in the ratings. They have expectations that the ratings will soon turn around when repeats begin to be played on other networks.
A repeat of C.S.I. came to be discouraging for the NBC network and the "Jay Leno Show." The "Jay Leno Show's" numbers are still declining.
In the initial overnight ratings, Mr. Leno had only 4.6 million viewers, this was his lowest number yet for Monday nights.
Among the group that NBC had high hopes for viewers watching the show, it only scored a 1.3 rating. These viewers that they had hoped would be prospects for watching the show were between the age of 18-49 years of age. Before the season started NBC stated that a modest number of 1.5 would be acceptable.
The show is still facing its competition at this time, with sports including "Monday Night Football."
Hopefully things will turn around for Mr. Leno and the ratings that he is receiving. I personally don't see this happening any time soon. I am not at all impressed with the show.

The Jay Leno Show is causing a major affect on other shows that are aired on NBC according to the article, Debate Over Effects of Leno's Show, and this is not a good affect. The problem is due to the decision to move the show to primetime at 10 p.m.
When Law and Order was aired at 10 p.m. it landed first in the ratings, now that the show is aired at 9 p.m. it has been finishing in last place. Jimmy Fallon who has an act on late night on NBC is trailing Conan O'brien, whom is on CBS. Many other shows have suffered due to there time slots changing.
It is also affecting the local news. Late newscasts have suffered significant drops in the ratings.
The Jay Leno Show brings in about five million viewers a night. This might sound like a big number but compared to dramas, five million isn't enough. Most shows would end up being canceled. "NBC has said from the beginning that it could accept much lower ratings because of the enormous cost savings of Mr. Leno’s show versus expensive hour long scripted dramas."
"Utter disaster" is how some producers are characterizing the state of NBC.
How much The Jay Leno show has affected NBC is unbelievable. NBC spent so much money on promoting The Jay Leno show, I am wondering now if they are asking themselves, was it worth it?

A Move to Curb Digitally Altered Photos in Ads

Due to women looking nearly perfect in magazines, most women are feeling the need that they should look just as perfect.
In the article, A move to Curb Digitally Altered Photos in Ads, Mr. Hudson states, "I have never yet seen, and you probably never will see, a fashion or beauty picture that hasn't been retouched." Most women though don't think this way. There is nothing on the ad or picture stating that it has been touched up.
Lawmakers in Britain and France are trying to change this. Under the proposal advertisements would be rated. For example a four would be given to a photo where someone had plastic surgery whereas a one would be given to a photo where they would have changed something as little as the lighting.
"These photos can lead people to believe in realities that, very often, do not exist."
I believe that having a number system on photos could help with the way women feel about themselves. I know that I become very self-conscious about myself after looking through a magazine. If I knew that someone had plastic surgery to look as good as they do in the photo I wouldn't feel so bad about the way that I looked. Mr. Hudson states that, "unfortunately we are living in a retouched world." With this being said I believe something does need to change. It is not fair to us women that we feel we should look as perfect as a digitally touched up photo looks.

Anne Nicole Smith's Doctors Were Warned

“Pharmaceutical suicide” is being linked to Anna Nicole Smith’s death, according to the article, Anna Nicole Smith’s doctors were warned.
Three pharmacists refused to fill the prescriptions and warned the doctors about how deadly the drugs are. The drugs included an anti-inflammatory drug, four bottles of a strong painkiller, two sedatives, a muscle relaxer, and 300 tablets of methadone.
Next month a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Smith’s boyfriend and her physicians in reference to whether or not Smith was illegally provided controlled substances, which lead to her death.
This is a story that hits very close to home for myself. My father passed away almost to years ago due to an overdose from prescription drugs. I have always wondered how it is so easy for doctors to write out prescriptions to people who don’t need to be taking all of the medicine they are being prescribed. After my father passed away I found out that two of the drugs in his system when taken together could lead to a fatality. Unfortunately justice was not served for the doctors who were prescribing large amounts of prescription drugs to my father. Hopefully the case will be different for Smith’s family and if she was prescribed the wrong amount of drugs justice will be served.

The promotion of "The Jay Leno Show"

"The Jay Leno Show" made its debut Monday night on NBC. According to the article, A Deluge by NBC to promote Leno's Show, an estimated ten million dollars was spent on promoting the new show.
It all began back in February when NBC ran a commercial during the Super Bowl to promote the show. The reason for spending this much money is because NBC believes that Mr. Leno is America's most popular t.v. personality. The ad's have been on taxi cabs, billboards, magazines, buses, movie theaters, radio stations, t.v., and even on gas pumps.
Repetition, repetition, repetition seems to be the main sales tactic for promoting the show. In my opinion this can lead to very high expectations for the viewers and I can speak from experience. I can't even count how many commercials I have seen with in the last few months promoting the show. I am a fan of Jay Leno and after seeing all of the commercials I watched the show to see what all of the hype was about. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. It was an okay show, funny at times, but spending ten million dollars to promote the show seems simply ridiculous.
